Design and Evaluation of a Virtual Gearshift Application using a Phantom Omni This project simulated an automobile's manual transmission. The pattern of the gearbox was simulated using the haptic device so that you could realistically move around in a standard "H" shifting pattern. As the user moves around in this virtual gearbox, forces are applied to the haptic device to simulate each wall of the gearbox and four gears. This can then be used for virtual prototyping of transmissions. In the automobile design industry, this would allow several virtual tests of different versions of gearbox designs before a real prototype is made. The realism of this virtual gearshift application was evaluated by users during an open-house event at the University of South Florida's Engineering Building.
